Also, does anyone know about the Chicago film fest? To those of you who wish to write me, I am looking for anyone who likes to discuss Tarkovsky's films, and as long as I have time, I can write and read email. Please respond within the next week or so, and if I have an email in Chicago, I can send it along. Thanks!

Comments: Hi, just wanted to tell you how much I also enjoy his fils, escpecially "Solaris" and "Mirror". I am 22 year old and not many on my age like the films i do. I liked his films at an earlier age also. I live on the North West coast of Norway, on an deserted island. So where I have my interes from I don't know. I have not seen all his films yet, but I have them in my shelf for a rainy day. I think you got alot of great stills, althrough I think you have to many in a sort of way. People wanting to watch his films may not be interested in seeing the intire film in stills before they watch it. It may spoil the viewing. Just keep some to make people curious! And maybee some more stills for us who have seen it allready. So, long, hope to study your pages more closely in the near future. Good work!!!

Comments: Thank you for this site dedicated to arguably the greatest director of all time. I remember seeing Tarkovsky in person at the (1986?) Telluride Film Festival. He caused a huge rucus when he exclaimed during the tribute to him, "Film is not entertainment!" -- and went on from there. This started a counterattack by another honoree, Richard Widmark; and the debate raged on through the entire [US] Labor Day Weekend. During that Festival, I saw "Andrei Rublev" for the first time. What a great film!

They have a web site at http://www.sacis.it I think that the person to talk to is Mrs. Giovanna Masella, though she might not work there any longer. You can also try Mr.Sesto Cifola Ñ but he is big shot and could be very busy Please bear in mind that SACIS is a distribution rights licensing company, and in case they will agree to sell you a VHS copy of the film, you will have to cover all expences e.g. 1" master to VHS transfer and some other things. You may try to introduce yourself as a videorights dealer and to ask to send you a viewing cassette. Best regards, Alex Asp

Comments: Hi. I'm fan of an American rock band R.E.M., and I just saw "Sacrifice" and in it I found an interesting scene that's just like one scene in a R.E.M. video "Losing my religion". So I thought of putting something about this on my homepage. This homepage is supposed to be seen only by 10 or 20 friends of mine. Just a small personal one. I just want to know if someone who saw my page knows any relationship between the film and the band. So I thought I had to put a link to some page introducing Tarkovsky, and I found this page very good. Please let me put a link to this page.

I travelled to Italy but could not find it on Video anywhere. I am very interested in obtaining any information about this film (as well as, of course, a copy of the film itself, if possible.) If anybody knows how to contact the appropriate people at RAI Video in Italy I would be very grateful.

Comments: I find this man's work fascinating because it denies even the basic conventions of rhythm, pacing, and storytelling that makes so many major movies these days "easy" to take. I found that I didn't immediately love Solaris or Stalker (sadly the only two I have yet seen), but in my memories the films grow and change. Perhaps Tarkovsky is a skilled hypnotist, perhaps a new type of artist, but he is definitely a good filmmaker. I wish I understood German so that I could get the most out of this site! Anyone interested in conversing in English with me about Stalker or Solaris, or even recommending which of the others are "definite sees"? The first time I saw that I literally couldn't believe my eyes. (P.S. not that it's the most important thing about the shot, but how did he do that? I think he must have used a helicoptor) Good work on the "Solaris" showing, Michael! I wish you a resounding success.

Stalker was my first Tarkovsky experience and it was a life-changer for me. I loved Nostalghia so much and am looking for a copy of it on video or laserdisc. Brigham Young University has a great international cinema department and has shown almost all Tarkovsky's films. Someone asked about finding who the distributors are for his films, you could check at www.byu.edu and look up the international cinema. The director would likely know how to order his films. I am just curious, but would anyone care to clarify what was meant IN THIS CONTEXT by the use of that term. Sadly, I have never seen or even heard of any movie theater around here ever playing one of Tarkovsky's films. I am stuck with watching video tape that does no justice to Tarkovsky's films (especially _The Sacrifice_ because it is so darkly lit-- video ruins the experience). Comments: Homesexuality? Bisexuality? Mysogyny? Tarkovsky was a great artist, in fact a genius in his field. The western academic agenda has taught us to take these 'cultural' realities and make them fixed entities ( the more the better since it will insure them years of tenure by being able to publish works that are 98% mimetic and have about 2% of originality). If there is any homoerotism in any of Tarkovsky's films then I must've been asleep while it was going on; as to the mysoginist tendencies: I think it safe to say that in Tarkovsky both female AND male suffer the wrath of this world's 'connective tissue', they are all part of what Witold Gombrowicz would call the 'interhuman church'; if anything I have always felt that Tarkovsky had a deep respect for women, his female characters all have an innate strength that a lot of his male characters lack. These comments on Tarkovsky's sexuality remind me of the recent 're-interpretations' of T.S. Eliot: yes he did have a few poems with antisemitic lines but does that make him anyless of a great poet. Art trangresses moral laws and precepts, sometimes towards themes that are considered 'right', at other times towards less palpable means, but is this not the nature of anything that attempts to deliver us from the repetitive neutrality of the everyday.

Comments: Regarding Andy Lees' posting below - I cannot believe Tarkovsky's alleged mysogynist tendencies have anything to do with closet homosexuality or anything of the sort. First of all, I can see eroticism in his films, but no homoeroticism. Next, what seems to us to be mysogynist might strike a Russian as relatively normal, Russia being a "politically incorrect" chauvinist culture where men's and women's roles are much more sharply defined than here. It is interesting that Tarkovsky's "mysogyny" was most blatant in the films he made in the West (if it exists in his earlier films, it is - and this could indeed be a pun - very watered down). These western women are seen as threats to the protagonist's integrity, but hardly to his sexuality. Perhaps Tarkovsky himself felt threatened or confused by Western women, and this came out in his last two films? And it became such an issue because relationships with the kind of strong Russian women we see in his earlier films were very important to his sense of well being? Gorchakov and Alexander are drawn to men, sure - Domenico, the postman - but this attraction is hardly erotic. Finally, how could a homosexual, repressed or no, write a screenplay - which he knew to be his last and in which he tried to express every last nuance of his convictions about life and art - where his alter-ego saves mankind by making love to a witch?

Comments: Are you guys familiar with Tarkovsky's production of Mussorsky's BORIS GUDUNOV. It's fascinating, featuring of course a giant bell as the centrepiece of the stage (shades of Roublev). I can make copies (vhs) if anyone wants it. I have a friend who was at the dress rehersal at Covent garden . Apparently used up the whole three hours directing the crowd scenes in act one, again and again until the audience was bored senseless !

Comments: does anyone know where to get hold of THE STEAMROLLER AND THE VIOLIN ? Also does ant one have any information/rumours on Tarkovsky's alleged homosexuality/bisexuality and how this relates to the rather misogynist treatment of women in his films. Finally i have a version of Andre Roublev taped from the BBC's Film 100 season (1995). It appears to be consideranly longer then the standard version does anyone know if this is Tarkovsky's THE PASSION ACCORDING TO ANDRE cut ? p.s. great page obviously.

Comments: Why Tarkovsky.... I made my first film, a short, it played a lot of festivals. An old artist, a very well regarded old artist, saw my film. My film is visual narrative, no dialog. The artist called me from across the country and said, in no uncertain terms, "You MUST see Tarkovsky! Nostalghia!" I thought I knew a lot about filmmakers and their work. I never heard of Tarkovsky. The painter was adamant, he sent me his copy of Nostalghia. It affected me profoundly, as he knew it would. -Robert Miller

Comments: After previously renting "Solaris" and "The Sacrafice", I finally purchased and saw "The Stalker" last night. These are incredible films, but also incredibly demanding - my partner, who normally shares my tastes if not my enthusiasm for films, finds them to be unwatchable. Two questions for those of you who check back here: Which of the remaining films would you recommend I purchase next? (I have to buy them, but fortunately have a good source.) Second, for those who have read the essay on "Solaris" on Michael's page, do you share that enthusiasm for Tarkovsky's film? I've read Lem, and I thought that "Solaris" was fascinating, but failed. Maybe I should look at it again...

Comments: My favorite moments: Mirror'; final sequence at the dacha, the wife lays on the husband's chest. He asks her, "Do you want a boy or a girl?". She looks up and tears roll down her cheeks. 'Solaris'; the driving sequence is just too good... if anybody has a theory that explains it, makes sense of the strange sounds in the background, don't tell me about it, I don't want to know! 'Sacrifice'; the love scene between that wonderful icelandic witch and the protagonist, the levitation especially... Interested to hear other people on this. His are such dense and hypnotic films that it's easy to forget whole sequences. I like being reminded. Anyone who feels that cinema seems a little empty after Tarkovsky, you should track down 'Sunless' (Sans-Soleil) by a French filmaker called Chris Marker. Also Eric Rohmer (also french) has been making films since the 1960s and he's darn good too. There are others, but these two definitely map out emotional spaces as dense and wonderful as everybody's favorite Russian. Also - I'm looking for a Tarkovskian girlfriend. Is there such a thing? Does Margarita Terekhova have a daughter? I'll buy her lunch...

I am an architecture student, who wants some day to make films and I would love to hear from any Tarkovsky enthusiasts about anything. Does anyone have any thoughts on the broad topic of Tarkovsky and architecture? I am hoping to set up a little festival of his films here, and it would help to have some related info. I hope to convert some of my classmates, and most of them have no idea who he is, except that his name is spoken by me every day. I think they are getting annoyed, so if there is some one who feels they can tolerate me out there, please send me some email.

For some reason, I dont know of many others who are as fanatic as myself, though I am at architecture school, a place one might expect to find Tarkovsky enthusiasts. It is my dream to become a film maker some day, and I would like to meet anyone who wants to talk about this director, and others, and things Russian and intellectual, or anything..... So if you read German you will have another source for that unique artist. I would like to ask whether someone has seen or knows about a documentary film made by Tarkovsky and Tonino Guerra in Italy (1981) called "Tempo di Viaggio" (Time of Travel). If you have, please let me know where can I purchase or have a copy of it, Gregory.

Still, his essay in Roger Ebert's Book of Film and the feature that Sight and Sound (January, I think) did on him has piqued my interest. Anyway, my video store only has Solaris and The Sacrifice. Which should I begin with? Also, do Tarkovsky's films have a similar feel with Bergman's The Seventh Seal? Please send replies to andrewty@i-manila.com.ph Thanks!

Comments: Tarkovsky is definitely the poet of cinema... however, i find him to be a bit depressing. it was nice when bergman gave up the theme of hope, i wish Tarkovsky had done likewise. He makes it perfectly clear that the only people who can live happily in the world are the madmen, and those who are not capable of abstract thought. This is why children are treated with such endearing support in his films. Tarkovsky definitely is my favorite film-maker... and Stalker is probably my favorite film. Yet, I still can't seem to subscribe to the stalker's hope, I am too drawn to the writers pessimism...

Comments: "The Sacrifice" should have been translated into English as "The Sacrificial Offering," but it's still one of my favorite films of all time, along with most of his other films I've seen. I feel a special kinship because some Soviet critics said he was "too introspective," and that's a criticism I hurl at my own poetry from time to time. He made life seem really alive, even on a screen; or, actually, especially on the screen.

Comments: I'm ecstatic to find a page dedicated to the greatest filmmaker! It's cool to see so many other Tarkovsky enthusiasts. I have not yet seen Mirror (can't find it), Nostalgia (is it on video in US?) and of course the short films. AT's films to me are quietly moving, poetic masterpieces, and true works of art of the highest and most important kind. I am certainly no film scholar but I recently began an on-going quest to familiarize myself with some of the most important works of the film world; I have seen films from many of the directors considered most influential and important, but now, after seeing Tarkovsky's work, I am depressed and do not know if I can continue. His films speak to me in such a way that nothing can really match the experience, and everything else pales in comparison. I saw someone mention the Stalker soundtrack, and I am interested in obtaining only the work that plays during the opening credits and is repeated throughout the film. If someone can tell where I could get my hands on this, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Comments: in the opinion of this film lover and "buff" andrei tarkovsky is not only the greatest filmmaker yet to live, he is also one of the most important artists of this century ranking up there with Picasso, Joyce, Faulkner, Beckett, Camus, Gershwin, Frank lloyd Wright, Dali, etc. Tarkovsky is such a personal and poetic artist that his films are so soft, smooth, and infinitely fascinating. watching his work is an experience that captivates the viewer and brings him/her into his world whether its on a spaceship, an island, or 15th century russia. the day he died was a day of great loss to the world of film art.

Comments: For anyone intersested: there is a modern classical CD compilation of different composers works dedicated to Tarkovsky, they are not soundtrack pieces but rather 'musical memorials'; the CD is entitled 'Hommage a Andrei Tarkovsky' (437 840-2;cd), it's on the Deutsche Grammophone label; There were also three essays on Tarkovsky in the January 1997 issue of Sight and Sound, the film magazine from London. My own fascination with this directors works began in a small bar in Hoboken, New Jersey. The bar would screen movies in the back every Tuesday night, on this particular night they were about to show Nostalgia. A small group of people and myself all sat in foldout chairs (very uncomfortable) and experienced Tarkovsky while in the adjoining room people drunkenly conversed at the top of their lungs. It was a very defining moment for me, I could not help but think that whoever created what I was watching was a genius. Andrei Tarkovsky, wherever you are, thank you.

Comments: Deutsche Grammophon has just released "Hommage a Andrei Tarkovsky" (437 840-2:CD), a live recording of a concert given four years after his death. There are works by Luigi Nono, Toru Takemitsu, Gyorgy Kurtag, Wolfgang Rihm and Peat Furrer, each inspired by Tarkovsky's art, and it's conducted by Claudio Abbado. There's a review at http://www.nytimes.com/yr/mo/day/artleisure/09grif.html (The New York Times on the web, Sunday edition - you might have to register, but it's free)

They are released under the label ARTIFICIAL EYE and are part of the CONNOISSEUR catalouge. Here is their address: CONNOISSEUR VIDEO LTD 10A STEPHEN MEWS LONDON W1P 0AX PH. 0171 957 8957 . Hope this will help! I think only ANDREI RUBLOV and SOLARIS are in WIDESCREEN though, a pity! They're about 16 pounds each. They also have other great hard-to-get directors on their list as well, like ALAIN RESNAIS, PASOLINI, early GREENAWAY etc. . Does anyone know of other distibutors that may have all the films in WIDESCREEN? Why aren't all movies sold in WIDESCREEN? If someone knows tell me please! They all should be released on video in this format, especially the likes of TARKOVSKY,GREENAWAY and RESNAIS!, that way you get the FULL film as it was intended, and there is so much information packed into GREENAWAY's films that you are surely missing out on something! And doesn't PAN AND SCAN look horrible!!!, especially in THE COOK THE THEIF... and BONDACHUK's WAR AND PEACE! . Hope that I was helpful Bye, ARCHIE.

Comments: Thanks for a great page!Tarkovsky - one of those visionaries and prophets whose legacy has always fascinated me.Would like to communicate with someone who, like me,is deeply touched by the life and work of that genius and find his vision of the world painfully close to one's own.I would also reccomend everybody to read Tarkovsky's diaries and recollections of people who knew him:these documents help better understand him and his films.

Does anyone else see "Stalker" as being a post-industrial interpretation of the Tao De Ching? If so please write me as I would love to discuss this with you. Of course "Adrei Rubilev" and "Solaris" are mighty in their own right as well.

And I'm lucky, because I live just 20 km far from the place (Bagno Vignoni) in which there is the big pool of hot water. It's a wonderful place... I saw also the picture of a pregnant woman that we can see at the beginning of NOSTALGHIA: it's Piero della Francesca's "Madonna del Parto", one of the most important works among Italian painture. Finally, I went also in the wonderful no-roof church of the film: it's the "Abbazia di S.Galgano", near Siena. And it's really like we can see in NOSTALGHIA. Maybe I could meet Andrej making this film!!!

Comments: someone asked about the chorale prelude in solaris. I believe its BWV 639. There are many recordings of this, but an excellent is by Peter Hurford, a British Organist, who has recorded all of Bach's organ works. This one is in volume 6. Actually, AT obviously had a deep appreciation for Bach as St. Mats passion is in the sacrifice and another chorale prelude is found in Mirror. Great to see so many people interested is such stuff, as locally most people don't even know who AT was.

Comments: The first film I saw was Sacrifice, and for the first time, I felt that I was viewing something that was of myself. I had to extract myself from the piece in order to view it as a work of art (like I do with other films). By the end I was mezmerized, but not consciously so. I had been drawn into myself so deeply, that "I" didn't exist anymore; I've had the same experience with Wim Wender's "Wings of Desire", I would recommend Wim's films to all who read this.

Comments: I don’t think the "being" in Solaris is non-human or alien. I see it as an aspect of life, and a big part of this aspect is the seductive nature of fantasy and wish-fulfillment. But the escapist pull of Solaris seduces people into an area of moral weakness. "Be careful what you ask for, you might get it". Solaris has a lot in common with the Zone in "Stalker" in the way it taps into subconscious desires and reveals man’s true moral nature, something most people don’t have the strength to confront. To quote T.S. Eliot, "Humankind cannot bear too much reality". I find "Solaris" to be Tarkovsky’s most pessimistic film - Andrei Rublev, the narrator in "Mirror", the Stalker, Gorchakov, Alexander, even Ivan all struggle against the temptation to just give up in the face of life’s horrors, and Kelvin is the only one who seems to succumb to the desire to hide from harsh reality in the oblivion of memory, and as a result loses his soul.

I have heard that the general consensus is that Andrei Rublyov is his greatest film: does anyone dispute this? (I have not seen it myself). There are two things I would like to know regarding his films: 1) What is the BWV number of Bach's Chorale Predule in F Minor (the theme in Solaris) 2) Does anyone know anything about the poet Arseny Tarkovsky? (A poem of his was read in Stalker) I would like to hear from anyone interested in discussing Tarkovsky in general! JM

Comments: I agree with everyone that Tarkovsky's one of the greatest. I agree with the comments that his films can only truly be appreciated on the big screen. Something happens to the films when they are put on video; I guess they get too dark, and thus one misses his profound subtlety. The very first Tarkovsky film I saw was the Sacrifice, on video yet! Although I couldn't make out a lot of the film because of way he filmed it ( in such subdued light) , it was an epiphany for me, as he really showed how a film can truly be a work of art. Ever since then, like everyone else on this page, I've voraciously eaten up everything Tarkovsky did ( including the "Steamroller and the violin") and wrote. I guess a current contemporary of his, who is doing similar astonishing work is Sakharov ( I think that's how its spelled). I've only seen two of this director's films and both of them left me mesmerized. Anyone else seen his stuff? Does anyone know who to get a hold of his video's if any are available etc etc. Nice talking to all of you. Its rare to meet people who appreciate Tarkovsky ( if you know what I mean).

It is fitting that his films sell out whenever they play in San Francisco. "On the one hand the artist is an ordinary person. On the other he cannot be ordinary, consequently he pays for his talent with his soul. Talent is not given to man by God; rather man is doomed to carry the cross of talent." - A.T.

Comments: Thanks for making the guestbook, Michael! I am in the middle of the Tarkovsky retrospective at the Anthology Film Archives here in NYC - I'll be seeing all of his full-length films in the space of eight days. Although I have seen all his films before, some several times, I continue to be astonished by the power and subtlety of his art. Seeing them all in such a short space of time is a fascinating experience - I found the artistic shift between "Mirror" and "Stalker" particularly fascinating. I would recommend this experience to any serious Tarkovksy fan. One problem, however, is the quality of the prints on show. The US distributor of "Mirror" and "Solaris" told me that the scratched, spliced, jumpy celluloid that the Anthology was using was the best available - apparently there are problems with getting new prints from the negatives in Russia. My Kino contact also told me that the owner of the rights to "Nostalgia", an Italian gentleman, is not very interested in making new prints available for theatrical screenings (he's only interested in video). I for one think Tarkovksy more than any other filmmaker MUST be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated, and am dismayed at this news. My ulterior motive is to get a first-class cinema in New York to do a retrospective with new prints, and if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can lobby for this, I'd love to hear them. One thing Kino told me is that Artificial Eye in London is planning to make new prints with English subtitles, but had no comment on whether these could be used for US screenings. I've written to Richard Pena at the Film Society of Lincoln Center suggesting that he do a Tarkovsky retrospective with new prints, and would be delighted if any of you would care to do the same.
