First thing I did after reading all pages on this site about Tarkovsky is copying it (the entire site) to the hard drive. Some web pages come and go. I dont want something this important to disappear. I want to keep it.

"Stalker" is the best film ever made. It is not a literature, it is not any kind of art, it is not even a movie. It is a contemplation of great mysterious, almost religious experience.

It's great coming across this page. It's a bit like going to a friend's funeral and being surprised and moved by the amount of people there. I came across Tarkovsky a few years ago, mainly through reading interviews with Kieslowski, and his films have provided me with some unforgettable experiences.

Hi, I've just become an ardent Tarkovsky fan, having first watched SOLARIS, then STALKER, and then ANDREI RUBLEV and THE MIRROR. I feel like my life has changed and my whole existence has taken on a higher level of meaning. His films are like an ore which reveals its deeper roots the more you mine it. His visual poetry is just stunning, evocative and full of yearning. I don't think I can any longer stand the Hollywood junks which are, as one put it, "all pulp and all fiction" dedicated to "muscle morons, Das Kapital and technology." I am sick of continually being entertained and distracted; the more I get entertained, the more I feel simply alienated. Great to find this beautifully crafted homepage, and a chance to meet other Tarkovskites from all over the world. By the way does any of you have a nice interpretation of the enigmatic smile of the young mother (Maria), mixed with tears, in the last scene of THE MIRROR? I understand that the scene brings together the past and the present (as can be seen from the juxtaposition of the old mother with the young mother and her children), but the mixture of joy and sadness on the young mother's face is haunting and intriguing. Please e-mail me at the given address. I would really like to commend whoever has created and maintains this website.

I just want to tell you a little story. Last summer, a film art house was screening all the winning cannes films as part of their fiftieth anniversary and I got my first opportunity to see a Tarkovsky film stoned. I decided to screen the SACRIFICE and ever since that one night my life has changed. If someone has experienced a similar "experience" I would appreciate hearing from you. I now own all seven features, not to mention having scrounged up almost every article written about the cinematic genius and his films. If anyone out there has not had the opportunity to see any of his films stoned, what the hell are you waiting for. Peace!

I am writing a book about the independent film movement for a major US publisher. I feel about Tarkovsky much the way I feel about Bach. I also agree very much with what he said about the difference between film as entertainment (i.e. Hollywood) and film as art (i.e. non-Hollywood). Would be interested in speaking with anyone inside or outside L.A. who appreciates what Tarkovsky was trying to do and say in film. Why is there so little of this kind of work around today. Why does garbage proflierate the commercial, mainstream cinema? Trying to talk to someone in L.A. about what Tarkovsky was about is like trying to talk about various brands of backyard barbecues with the Inuit or other Arctic denizens. I would also like to discuss Sculpting in Time, the book, with anyone who has any strong opinions about it and has biographical information about the author. G-d bless AT. Tarkovsky's films speak to that which is the most intimate in all human beings. They are like stalkers, who guide and teach. I have been seeing them over and over again since I was 15, and every new time I discovered new levels of meaning. A mark of a genuis is infinity and vastness of space within. It is a joy to see so many of you from all the corners of this planet. His films have a life of their own and they travel around the globe as guides for us to follow. Tarkovsky was a visionary and his films have layers and layers of meaning. They are like a well into cosmos and each of us has to jump inside to find his own wisdom. All of you who love Tarkovsky, we should become a travel net- work, from New Zealand to Lapland. After all, this is a beautiful route to travel. If any of you ever comes to Boston,I have books, videos and thoughts to share. 617-628-3124.Elena

Saw Alexander Sokurov's "Mother" last night. Paul Schrader says he's the only film-maker working in the transendental style today. The film has the visual poetry and haunting imagery of Carl Dryer. Some close-ups even remind me of "The Passion of Joan of Arc." Sokurov is a disciple of Tarkovsky, and any person truly concerned with the fate of cinema, its redemption from the fatalistic greed of philistines, will support this film. Sokurov, Angelopoulos, Imamura, Godard, Rivette, Antonioni, and a few American directors are all that's left of the cinema. After they have gone, who is left?

Thankyou for making such a site available! Already I see in the technology of the Internet the possibility of a new kind of community and thinking about Tarkovsky--whose films might take us beyond the institutional practices of cinematic studies and virtual museums and into a new way of coming to understand the way these films open windows to how we experience our own lives.

There will be an Andrei Tarkovsky retrospective in Los Angeles starting in late February. His films will be playing at the Nuart (on Santa Monica near the 405), in west Los Angeles. They will be playing "Ivan's Childhood", "Andrei Rublev", "Stalker", "Mirror", "Nostalgia", and "The Sacrifice." They claim there is no no available 35mm print of "Solaris" in this country, though it has screened in Los Angeles before. Also, one week before, the lastest film by Alexander Sokurov, "Mother," will be playing. Many know this film-maker as Tarkovsky's last disciple. They're wrong, of course. I am. Ciao

Emotion to be one more human being filled with hopes, doubts and a connection to the wholeness of the deepest sense of matter. That's the feeling I have when confronted to Tarkovsky's work, whatever could be. Tarkovsky represents to me one of the masters of the cinema as an art (and expression) form, which, considering this times, talk about DIGNITY, as one of the human race memories on this place which all of us can be proud of. Thanks for the opportunity. Gracias!

Andrei Tarkovsky was more than a great filmmaker: he was a genuine SEEKER OF TRUTH. He knew that any cinema, which was devoid of the human spirit's compulsion to seek out the meaning of its existence, was not true cinema at all. Perhaps the greatest benefit that his films now offer to the world is their remarkable documentation of his searching spirit. In our new web site Truth-in-Cinema Quest at http://www.hal-pc.org/~questers, we place particular emphasis on those directors, including Tarkovsky, who have used film as a tool for deep spiritual searching. Perhaps, this was the way film was meant to be used all along. Tarkovsky certainly thought so.

When I saw Stalker, I discovered a great and very sensitive poet, and since then I consider Tarkovsky one of my most beloved film makers. The questioning about the existence of God, the solitude and the need of hope and faith, are themes that I find very close to me, so Tarkovsky, along with Ingmar Bergman, are for me open windows to the human spirit, to the most sensitive and deep parts of it...And the photografy and scenes, the use of silence and their treatment of the story are admirable and exquisite. Thanks for dedicating this page to that great artist.

Thank god this page exist! Reading all previous, I just can't get rid of feeling like something wrong,uncomplete... ...I remember myself in 1980 beleiving, that there are only few filmdirectors in Soviet Union: Tarkovsky,Mikhalkov, Ioseliani and Paradjanov. Last 3 of them were like art, Andrey was like a CONSCIENCE... The WAY, the HOPE ,the PAIN... Of course, later I have discovered other names and movies around the world, other ARTs..., but Tarkovsky ( with his just few movies !) ... conscience... . Thank you, Andrey.

Am absolutely thrilled that there are so many people from so many places who love Tarkovsky. I am a Lit. major and am struck by the fact that AT is the most literary of directors. His use of poetry alone would secure him a place in my heart--but then he is also such a poet with the camera. I especially love his later films--From Mirror on he moves farther and farther away from standard narrative. Nostalghia is about the most beautiful thing I have ever seen--it is as though I am able to enjoy literature, music, painting and film all at once. And then to end his career (his life!) with that beautifully simplistic image of Little Man under the tree, questioning the words of his father . . . I wonder if film will ever have a figure of such depth and beauty again. As one other entry already said so well, in a better world AT would have the same influence as a Spielberg. When people ask me why it is that Russia has produced few great poets, and fewer great literary figures in the 20th century I always tell them that the legacy of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev and Chekhov has been inherited not by a writer--but by a filmmaker. My entire attitude towards film, art, and even life has been (and is still being) changed by Tarkovsky's seven films and two books. I thank him.

I have been an observer of Tarkovsky's work since I saw 'Stalker' on our national TV back in 1980. The effect was immediate. Here was a film which touched the senses deeply. Many years later, I have yet to come across a director whose aesthetics encompass the visual, and aural senses so well. An inspirational, optimistic ( to me ) artist whose work, though not easy to assimilate, has made a deep personal connection

Geweldig, een homepage van andrei tarkovski. Dat had ik nooit verwacht. Sorry dit is nederlands, laat ik het eens met engels proberen. Allright that was a little bit of dutch to express my immediate enthousiasm for this site. This site is greater than great and better than the best. Why, well because i saw the film stalker a long time ago in a little cinema. Ever since it kept a hold on me. Later i started a company which trains people in the field of datacommunications and generic cabling systems. The name of the company is off course: "stalker". That is my small tribute the genius of tarkovski. I purchased a very big film poster of stalker in amsterdam, the store is named cine qua non. They are located very near the Stopera in Amsterdam. The also had some pictures of stalker but i only wanted the poster. The poster is probably painted in france and has a blue background with a white triangular in the middle. The edges of the triangular are presented by the faces of the three leading characters of the film. The poster size is about 120 x 160 cm, i have had it framed so it looks very nice. If you would like to borrow this poster for an exhibituion or otherwise i would be happy to lent it it you.

In fact, there was recentely a very complete review on his filmography here. There was also a seminar on his work, where they showed "Directed by Andrei Tarkowski". Another seminar will take place in January. Next year I plan to do my thesis for my degree in Social Communications on Tarkowski, so I will be collecting all the information I can. Tarkovsky must arguably be one of the greatest directors in the 20th century, along with Bergman, Godard, Chen Kaige and a few others. It is very encouraging to see this homepage dedicated to him, but at the same time, it is very sad to think that there are probably few financers who will risk funding films of this sort. Something must be done to help and encourage young filmakers around the world who are talented and serious about their art, unlike the Hollywood spectacle-makers churning out more pulp and more fiction.

Andrei Tarkovsky was a genius. He makes the most personal, humanistic, beautiful films ever created. There are moments and scenes in his movies that linger on forever, like dreams, and meld into our reality, so you sometimes almost question which is which. I think it would have been so amazing to meet a man like him. And it pleases me to see so many people who appreciate his work. His best film?: Andrei Rublev. His most personal?: i think Nostalghia (it's dedicated to his mother). His most vivid and transfixing, and my personal favorite? Stalker. His films inspire me (along with the films of Lars von Trier) to make my own films... Also, to anyone in the Bay area, I work at Reel.com in Berkeley, we have all of his films that exist on video if you are interested in seeing his work. Ciao.

Less of a guest-book, more of a bulletin board. How about creating a board for all us Tarkovsky fans? At the Edinburgh Film Festival in 1996, I saw Mirror with one of Andrei's sisters giving a presentation, and answering questions. An emotional showing, she said the film was just like their childhood. I also saw Ivan's Childhood presented by the actor who plays Ivan. He was also the bell-maker in Andrei Rublev. Someone in the audience asked him if the making of the bell was meant by Tarkovsky to be a metaphor for his film-making process, but he couldn't confirm this, and in fact seemed slightly surprised by what seemed to make perfect sense. Any thoughts on this? Would anyone out there agree that one of the things that makes Tarkovsky's films so different and special is his extremely long takes, often up to 8 minutes without a cut? Very few other directors do this. For example, the house on fire scene at the climax of The Sacrifice, done with one camera, and presumably in one take. (Unless they rebuilt the house for more takes). Many of his films have little digressions that are often fascinating, beautiful, etc. For example, the start of Andrei Rublev, ? and if you say ya, is he dead ? I have twenty and i have the unluke to have seen stalker fews months ago, this movie and i does not speak about nostalgika that i just look a little, is out fo understanding for me. 2) why does at show us the nuclear central at the end of STALKER (1979 and not 1986) ? 3) when i will be older is Nostalgica true ? I speak French , English and spanish, please answer me

Once I saw "Nevsky" I became hooked on Russian cinema. Needless to say my love only grew after I discovered "Stalker". I still love his work and sometimes try to relate it to architecture, although this often proves to be fustrating and tiresom.

I am at work and wish I was somewhere else. I was going to say someone else. Anyway, Tarkovsky is up there with the greatest. I wish I could get hold of a camera and follow in his soft footsteps.

I just wanted to mention, for the people who are just discovering Tarkovsky's works, you might also check out Pasolini's stuff, if you can find it ( unfortunately, there is little available on video) or Sakurov's works which i think are only accessible in film festivals.

Hi everyone, nice to see so many enthusiastic AT fans. Its unfortunate that he only made 7 films, but there's so much material in those films, that one can watch them over and over again, and still learn something new. For example, seeing Stalker a second time recently, made me focus on ATs philosophy rather than waiting for "the room". It still amazes me that after that 2hour plus film, we never get to see the room. How many film makers can keep you in suspense, and then not really show you what you were waiting for, and still give you a feeling of satisfcation at the end. Talking about favourite moments in his films? Its almost impossible to single any moment out! I love the wind blowing through the childs bedroom in sacrifice for ex, or grandmother sitting at ignatievo forest at the end of mirror......

HI, I have only seen the SACRIFICE of Tarkovsky, but congratulations for the page, it is really interesting but now I dont know which is the next Tarkovsky movie I should see, it seems they are all so good!. I am not as enthusiastic with The Sacrifice as most of you, but it is a nice film, although I prefer the first hour of the film than the second one, before the nuclear disaster, it has more of a bergman taste. I would like you to write to me and tell me whatever you think about this movie or any other one, cause I love cinema. Id like to know about people who have any information on Emir Kusturica, Im deeply interested in this great director. Thanks. BYE

Hello, dear friends! First of all I`d like to say how much i appreciate your work for Tarkovsky memory. I was just completly pissed off by the fact that in all this gigantic list of guest sighns only one was from Russia. That is really strange. Also, Iwould like to notice that Sergey Paradganov was in prison in Soviet times not for drugs (as it serbian guest has written) but for his homosexualitty. From the other Tarkovsky never had a deal with it (as one of guests suggested). I know his cousin, red plenty of biografical books including private life concerned. It's just not so.

The Strugatsky Brothers book is entitle 'Roadside Picnic', and it's very different from the movie STALKER.
Isidro <tasmella@sirius.com>
San Francisco, CA USA - For George Poulsen from Brazil : Strugatsky's book has another name -something like "The picnic on the side (or on the virge) ". They (Strugatskys brothers) tried to write a script for Tarkovsky's film according to this book , but they got something very different from it .If you liked the film "Stalker", you might be dissapointed with this book,

Comments: Greetings, Tarkovsky lovers! I need your help. This summer, I will be in Paris for a few days. I understand that Tarkovsky's grave is somewhere in Paris. Does anyone know *exactly* where it is located? I'm not familiar with the city at all, so I would need fairly specific directions. I would like to visit the grave not out of morbid curiousity, but in order to pay homage to his genius. Thanks in advance!

Comments: in the opinion of this film lover and "buff" andrei tarkovsky is not only the greatest filmmaker yet to live, he is also one of the most important artists of this century ranking up there with Picasso, Joyce, Faulkner, Beckett, Camus, Gershwin, Frank lloyd Wright, Dali, etc. Tarkovsky is such a personal and poetic artist that his films are so soft, smooth, and infinitely fascinating. watching his work is an experience that captivates the viewer and brings him/her into his world whether its on a spaceship, an island, or 15th century russia. the day he died was a day of great loss to the world of film art.

Comments: For anyone intersested: there is a modern classical CD compilation of different composers works dedicated to Tarkovsky, they are not soundtrack pieces but rather 'musical memorials'; the CD is entitled 'Hommage a Andrei Tarkovsky' (437 840-2;cd), it's on the Deutsche Grammophone label; There were also three essays on Tarkovsky in the January 1997 issue of Sight and Sound, the film magazine from London. My own fascination with this directors works began in a small bar in Hoboken, New Jersey. The bar would screen movies in the back every Tuesday night, on this particular night they were about to show Nostalgia. A small group of people and myself all sat in foldout chairs (very uncomfortable) and experienced Tarkovsky while in the adjoining room people drunkenly conversed at the top of their lungs. It was a very defining moment for me, I could not help but think that whoever created what I was watching was a genius. Andrei Tarkovsky, wherever you are, thank you.

I saw also the picture of a pregnant woman that we can see at the beginning of NOSTALGHIA: it's Piero della Francesca's "Madonna del Parto", one of the most important works among Italian painture. Finally, I went also in the wonderful no-roof church of the film: it's the "Abbazia di S.Galgano", near Siena. And it's really like we can see in NOSTALGHIA. Comments: someone asked about the chorale prelude in solaris. I believe its BWV 639. There are many recordings of this, but an excellent is by Peter Hurford, a British Organist, who has recorded all of Bach's organ works. This one is in volume 6. Actually, AT obviously had a deep appreciation for Bach as St. Mats passion is in the sacrifice and another chorale prelude is found in Mirror. Great to see so many people interested is such stuff, as locally most people don't even know who AT was.

Comments: Hello, I'm a student at Johns Hopkins University. For my undergraduate honors thesis, I have decided to work on the films of Tarkovsky. I'm happy that there are so many Tarkovsky enthusiasts! Is there any way that I can obtain an English subtitled version of _Nostalgia_?

Comments: good job on the page. we all need more Tarkovsky reference material. His approach to filmaking has had a profound effect on my aesthete stemming from many years back. I would like to know, however, if there are any web-sources dedicated to A.T.'s contemporary Sergei Parajnadov. There seems to be even less information on him available than there is on Tarkovsky! I am also looking for copies of his work for trade or purchase. Can anyone help me out?

Comments: The first film I saw was Sacrifice, and for the first time, I felt that I was viewing something that was of myself. I had to extract myself from the piece in order to view it as a work of art (like I do with other films). By the end I was mezmerized, but not consciously so. I had been drawn into myself so deeply, that "I" didn't exist anymore; I've had the same experience with Wim Wender's "Wings of Desire", I would recommend Wim's films to all who read this.

Comments: I don’t think the "being" in Solaris is non-human or alien. I see it as an aspect of life, and a big part of this aspect is the seductive nature of fantasy and wish-fulfillment. But the escapist pull of Solaris seduces people into an area of moral weakness. "Be careful what you ask for, you might get it". Solaris has a lot in common with the Zone in "Stalker" in the way it taps into subconscious desires and reveals man’s true moral nature, something most people don’t have the strength to confront. To quote T.S. Eliot, "Humankind cannot bear too much reality". I find "Solaris" to be Tarkovsky’s most pessimistic film - Andrei Rublev, the narrator in "Mirror", the Stalker, Gorchakov, Alexander, even Ivan all struggle against the temptation to just give up in the face of life’s horrors, and Kelvin is the only one who seems to succumb to the desire to hide from harsh reality in the oblivion of memory, and as a result loses his soul.

Comments: For me, Tarkovsky is the greatest director, and I have only seen four of his films. I have heard that the general consensus is that Andrei Rublyov is his greatest film: does anyone dispute this? (I have not seen it myself). There are two things I would like to know regarding his films: 1) What is the BWV number of Bach's Chorale Predule in F Minor (the theme in Solaris) 2) Does anyone know anything about the poet Arseny Tarkovsky? (A poem of his was read in Stalker) I would like to hear from anyone interested in discussing Tarkovsky in general! JM

Comments: First time I saw film of A.Tarkovsky was in my childhood, and that was "Stalker". I only can remember that it left dark and disturbing impression. A few years the same film hit me again, and only then I understood the perfectness of Tarkovsky's direction and ... well, what words can say? Since now, when I've seen all of Tarkovsky's films several times, "Stalker" is still one of the most conjuring.

Comments: I agree with everyone that Tarkovsky's one of the greatest. I agree with the comments that his films can only truly be appreciated on the big screen. Something happens to the films when they are put on video; I guess they get too dark, and thus one misses his profound subtlety. The very first Tarkovsky film I saw was the Sacrifice, on video yet! Although I couldn't make out a lot of the film because of way he filmed it ( in such subdued light) , it was an epiphany for me, as he really showed how a film can truly be a work of art. Ever since then, like everyone else on this page, I've voraciously eaten up everything Tarkovsky did ( including the "Steamroller and the violin") and wrote. I guess a current contemporary of his, who is doing similar astonishing work is Sakharov ( I think that's how its spelled). I've only seen two of this director's films and both of them left me mesmerized. Anyone else seen his stuff? Does anyone know who to get a hold of his video's if any are available etc etc. Nice talking to all of you. Its rare to meet people who appreciate Tarkovsky ( if you know what I mean).

Comments: A true visionary. I have seen all his films, as many times as they show. About 2 years ago, I saw a new print of Solaris so one must be "out there". It is fitting that his films sell out whenever they play in San Francisco. "On the one hand the artist is an ordinary person. On the other he cannot be ordinary, consequently he pays for his talent with his soul. Talent is not given to man by God; rather man is doomed to carry the cross of talent." - A.T.

Comments: Thanks for making the guestbook, Michael! I am in the middle of the Tarkovsky retrospective at the Anthology Film Archives here in NYC - I'll be seeing all of his full-length films in the space of eight days. Although I have seen all his films before, some several times, I continue to be astonished by the power and subtlety of his art. Seeing them all in such a short space of time is a fascinating experience - I found the artistic shift between "Mirror" and "Stalker" particularly fascinating. I would recommend this experience to any serious Tarkovksy fan. One problem, however, is the quality of the prints on show. The US distributor of "Mirror" and "Solaris" told me that the scratched, spliced, jumpy celluloid that the Anthology was using was the best available - apparently there are problems with getting new prints from the negatives in Russia. My Kino contact also told me that the owner of the rights to "Nostalgia", an Italian gentleman, is not very interested in making new prints available for theatrical screenings (he's only interested in video). I for one think Tarkovksy more than any other filmmaker MUST be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated, and am dismayed at this news. My ulterior motive is to get a first-class cinema in New York to do a retrospective with new prints, and if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can lobby for this, I'd love to hear them. One thing Kino told me is that Artificial Eye in London is planning to make new prints with English subtitles, but had no comment on whether these could be used for US screenings. I've written to Richard Pena at the Film Society of Lincoln Center suggesting that he do a Tarkovsky retrospective with new prints, and would be delighted if any of you would care to do the same.
