Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia - Saturday, December 02, 2000 at 03:56:55 (PST)I wish there were other directors like him in the modern cinema.Alas..
It was so exiting to stumble upon such a good web site.I could never imagine there are people still interested
in his films - somehow I always considered my interest a little obsessive (particularly the preoccupation
with Stalker .I saw it for the first time 20 yers ago but still every time watching it leaves tremendous impression and every time I find something new.)
The atmosphere ,the deapth of thought,visuals...I have never seen something even remotly similar. For me waching his movies is something akin to religious
expirience.

toronto, canada - Friday, December 01, 2000 at 09:34:17 (PST)This may sound silly, but this site came up when looking for apartment share agencies; it is a good omen. Tarkovsky, along with Bergman and Visconti are my favorite directors. Do with this information what you will. If anyone has a space to rent in New York for less than 800$ call (646)245-7899. Tarkovsky's vision and morality could not be more at odds with our soulless, technology worshiping totalitarian system.
yours very truly,
Michael O'Donnell

I recently saw Nostalgia. In fact, saw it yesterday. The mood of the film has been floating around my head and everything is blurry melancholy.
What has this film done to me.
Is this comment dumb or what. :)

- Sunday, November 26, 2000 at 12:43:11 (PST)I like Tarkovsky´s mythical sets. He had a feeling for the emotion behind a scene.
Okay , my english is really bad....deshalb noch einmal auf Deutsch .
Andreas Jupe <3eye@gmx.net>

lisbon, portugal - Wednesday, November 01, 2000 at 21:13:39 (PST)can anyone explain the motivation behind tarkovsky's
room made of mirrors and how did he shoot in it without
the camera and crew showing up in the shots by reflection? i.e.(solaris)my colleugue in our film dept. asked me a strange question(which he allready knew the answer to) he asked "if theres a room made of wall to wall mirror and you can look into it without being in it what is it reflecting?" I paused for a couple seconds,(I guess I was stumped)"___nothing." he said..then he mentioned the other problem? it was that of how to shoot a scene without the camera being shown.
of course I had to envision myself in a mirrored cylander hiding in it with a camera and the room being completly round with nothing in it!(did anybody know about that lense that can capture 360 degrees at once?!) I've realised that Tarkovsky might be inadvertantly plunging me into a strange paradox or rather that which modern physics ignores__ "space time continuum?"

Porto Alegre, RS Brasil - Sunday, August 13, 2000 at 08:41:18 (PDT)this is an excellent web page. Its just to bad that their arent enough web pages devoted to andre tarkovsky. He was a wonderful film maker whos films captured a sense of beuty and mysticism like no other film in recent memory. His long long takes were able to convey a sense of spirituality and emotional power that has always moved me when watching his films(espicialy in the Mirror where his technique of film making worked perfectly). I hope this website continues to keep up its excellent work on Tarkovsky and I hope that someday a filmaaker comes aong and tries to make a differance in society through his films like Tarkovskys did.

I just saw two AT films: Solaris and Mirror, and will watch Stalker tomorrow. I´m very impressed by his aesthetic work, very out-of-time and innovative, and very in tune with the kind of experimental music I like (check out finnish duo Pan sonic, they are AT fans). Althougt there is a millon details to bear in mind in each plot, I feel like letting the images embrace me without making any effot in understanding the truths behind them (Thus these movies have initiated long conversations with friends about these hidden motives) Great soundtracks, also very innovative with those intimidating low frequency sounds that grow up to noise.

Si sta bene al sole
Eppur questo non basta
Quel che poteva essere
Come una foglia dalle cinque punte
Mi si è posato sulla mano
Eppur questo non basta
Né il bene né il male
Sono passati invano
Tutto era chiaro e luminoso
Eppur questo non basta
La vita mi prendeva sotto l'ala
Mi proteggeva, mi salvava
Ero davvero fortunato
Eppur questo non basta
Non sono bruciate le foglie
Non si sono spezzati i rami
Il giorno è terso come cristallo
Eppur questo non basta.

to discover the works of Andrei tarkovsky is like stumbling into a secret garden.
When one watches his films, one is forced to have the eyes of a child; seeing
things as he/ she were seeing them for the first time. I stare in awe. Most recently
when a local theatre was showing Solaris, I noticed that I could not turn my head.

After spending three years in graduate film school, the only book that really
captured the essence of cinema, in my opinion, was Tarkovsky's "Sculpting In Time".
For anyone fascinated with film or Tarkovsky it really is a must read. Of all
filmmakers Tarkovsky's images stand alone, above those of Antonioni, Bergman,
Bresson, Bertolucci, Dovshanko, Fellini, Kusturica, and Welles (although those
directors are pretty good too!). What a legacy! Watching Tarkovsky gives you the
same satisfaction as listening to the Goldberg Variations by Bach, or the third
movement of Beethoven's ninth, or Mozart's Piano Concerto #20, true divinity.
If anyone's interested in Tarkovsky, I would also suggest taking a look at the
films of Ozu and Bresson, particularly Tokyo Story and Mouchet.

Just saw again Andrej Rubliov. The opening shot - The Flight- is one of the
greatest things ever done by a film-maker.Tarkovsky has been one of the deepest
esthetic experiences of my life. His images keep on coming back to me,even when
I less expect them, as true art always does. I am also very interested in Bergman,
Dreyer, Antonioni. I would like very much to enter in touch with anybody willing
to discuss about cinema (film-makers or just afecionado's, people with hungry
eyes, longing for the other side of the Mirror). "Beauty will save the world" :
isn't the Stalker closely connected with Prince Myskin? (The same purity, the
same hidden despair, the same feeling of being trapped, imprisoned). Anybody longing
for Elsewhere can write me in english, italian or dutch.

Me metí
me parece antológica...

I believe that Ingmar Berman had characterized Tarkovsky highly precisely,
and if we just stop for a second and read again what he said it makes REALLY a
lot of sence :
Tarkovsky is for me the greatest, the one who invented a new language,
true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream.

Sólo me queda esperar

15 years ago. I hardly understood French and not a word on Russian. Never the
less I saw the complete film in astonishment and was able to understand that I
was in front of a masterpiece. Since then I´ve always tried in vain to clasify
the film. For me it belongs to a realm that is no longer cinema. Tarkovsky uses
cinema to transmit feelings and ideas that go beyond any art and get as closer
as one cans to the meta-physics. I admire very much his other films, particulary
The Mirror and Ivan's youth, but Andrei Rubliev was from the first day and will
continue to be one of my greatest experiences in life.

paradjanov and tarkovsky, You know something?, if the answer is afirmativ, please
where can i find a copy, an original video tape in ntsc with english subtitles?
I discovered the poetry cause a friend of mine showd me the persuassive effect
of words as a tool to create or comunicate images, emotions and the self, they
are poets of the visual language and with this vision, the uncertain feeling of
the post-modern times, is easier to carry, but not at all.

Andrei Tarkovsky and Stanley Kubrick are both in my opinion the two greatest
masters of Cinema ever to live.I admire the work of these two directors because
of the level of depth that can be found on their works and because their movies
always become deeper after each viewing. Too bad they are gone now.

The greatest virtue of Tarkovskiy is that his movies prove the existence of
god. Watching them is enough to set a wondering soul onto the right path. After
all, how can one not love our world, which is so beautiful? Dostoyevskiy once
wrote that beauty will save the world - through painting, through Tarkovkskiy's
movies, through music, we know this beauty, even if we were once too blind to
see it surrounding us everywhere, but, alas, the world does not listen to its
call. It lives with false ideals, and that is a shame.

To me Andrei Tarkovsky is one of the most honest filmmakers I have ever seen.
His camera is an observer into the worlds he has created. The actions take place
by the actors, not the special effects. His love of nature (the Earth) is evident
in every one of his works. It is a shame there is only 7 films to see by him.
In a perfect world there would be 700 films by him.

The first Tarkovsky movie I saw was 'Stalker'. I was so impressed by its unusual
pace. Especially the shots involving dripping or flowing water created in me a
state of peacefulness. It was as if I were on a trip to finding my inner freedom
and thus escaping the fast paced world we're living in. After my first viewing
I went a second time and was even more impressed. I loved how Andrei Tarkovsky
'combined' impressive images, sound of dripping/flowing water and sporadically
silence to a piece of visual poetry. The only works of an other director I had
a similar experience with was Stanley Kubrick's movies, especially '2001'. So
far, 'Andrei Rublev', 'Stalker' and 'Nostalghia' are the only movies of his I've
seen yet. I long to see 'Solaris'. Unfortunately, it hasn't been released on DVD
yet. I hereby salute the Tarkovsky Fans all over the world. Fortinbras

He is for me in film what jackson pollock, or rembrandt, or de kooning, or
van gogh does for me on canvas: he sends me to a deeper part of myself that I

I firmily believe that Tarkovsky was one of the best european directors and
the best russian of the last 20 years. His poetic films opened and still open
me some views of my self and the entire world. Every time I see a movie of him
again then I understand some hidden views of him which are not so clear with a
first look and clear for everyone. It is sad when you think that the creator of
masterpieces like Solaris, Zerkalo, Nostalghia, Stalker, Sacrifice does not live
anymore and that he left in his mid-fifties an age that he could offer us more
magical moments. A memmorable european director with his own personal style that
no other director can copy him. With his movies we will remember him for ever.

formalistic and mystical films with Sacrifice and Zerkalo.

Paradjanov once told a journalist that after he had been in prison they finally
met again. Tarkovskij went to Tiblisi to meet Paradjanov. They met, Tarkovskij
stayed a week and he cried the whole time. Another time Tarkovskij asked Paradjanov
what he thought Tarkovski himself lacked to be a great director. Paradjanov answered
that Tarkovskij already was a great director but if he lacked something that was
one year of maximum security prison camp. Tarkovskij took the suggestion seriously
and asked Paradjanov whether he should really try to get such an experience. All
in the name of great art.

A friend suggested Solaris to me a few weeks back, and now I've become entranced
by the director. It was one of the most explosive experiences I've had in the
theatre since Koyaanisqatsi and The Street of Crocodiles. It was as if a hammer
was above me the whole way through, slowly descending, and then pulverising at
the end. Justin Rubin <jrubin1@d.umn.edu>

First of all... this site is perfect. I am a "Visual Communications Design"
student in a university in Istanbul... still in the preparation class. I did not
really know something about Tarkovsky 2 weeks ago. I have just decided to create
a feedback for my Movie studies that I will need next year and randomly picked
up a director name. What a luck that I have picked up the name "Andrei Tarkovsky".
I have seen "The Mirror"... "The Sacrifice"... "Solaris" and "STALKER". I have
just realized in a surprise that I had watched "STALKER" and "Solaris" when I
was a child. Those movies impressed me very much in those days and shaped up my
child psychology. But how sad is that I did not know that those master pieces
were products of Tarkovsky. Now after so many years I have discovered the owner
of these perfect movies and the depths of my imagination. I am really inspired
by his so real "unreality" products. I am planning to shoot a short movie and
reflect what I have learned form Tarkovsky. But I have a small problem. I must
confess that I have a very weak literature background. So I could not figure out
the literature side, the connections between Nietzche and Tarkovsky. I really
need help. I am waiting for any kind of information. Thanks to every one visiting
this page. (The e-mail address is wrong in my previous message. [Muhittin99@hotmail.com]

I am , or should be at this moment, writing my thesis on Nietzsche and Tarkovski,
and want to show that film can provide the nescesary space for tragedy in our
lives. Tarkovski, Dostajevski, Toergenjev and Vysotski are my examples of the
Russian Soul, I would like to refer to, in order to clarify the metafysical quality
I have experienced with these genius people. Is there a Russian, or any other
soul, who shares my love for art and wisdom? Please contact me at my e-mail address.

I am really excited and hope to see more of your work. I am african american
and I understand that " african americans" are really unheard of in Russia. I
think that it would be a challenge, and that you should probably consider producing
a film and introduce our race to your country. We are good for seductive, savvy,
and comedic roles. I really think that introducing the african american may surprisingly
become very profitable, I was fortunate to meet a Russian, doctor, and after a
rather lengthy friendship, I decided for myself, that could be very profitable.

I think this site is very well put together. However, I strongly resent the
general idolatry surrounding Tarkovsky's work that seems to emanate from most
of the comments. He is definitely one of the major artists of this century and
his films mean a lot to me personally; but building "fan" cults around him and
calling him a prophet is sheer nonsense. Great art is only great when it serves
no ideological purpose, be that a religious message or a Communist call-to-arms.
"All art is quite useless", said Oscar Wilde. Tarkovsky's films are, indeed, "spiritual";
but neither Hollywood-poisoned long-haired film students, nor high-brow film critics
(who still think that Russians during the Communist rule were all brain-dead en
masse) have the slightest clue to what that spirituality is about. Tarkovsky,
like Shostakovich, spoke to his nation about their own sorrows and tragedies.
Western viewers may put Tarkovsky on the pedestal - for it is very fashionable
in the West to be misunderstood as an artist - but the simple truth is, they just
don't know the context of his works well enough. Tarkovsky's message, I think,
is very much inferior to the richness and originality of his imagination. He was
very well aware that the ideologically sterile West is ready to stare open-mouthed
at anybody who claims to bring spiritual truth, especially if dressed in the mysterious
clothes of a unknown culture. He exploited that to bring publicity and get money
for what really was important to him, his films. If scoured for "messages" and
"truths", he, like Hermann Hesse, becomes ponderous, and ultimately, profoundly
silly and cheap. If looked at as art, as something from a totally different time
and place made believable and real through the power and mastery of an artist,
Tarkovsky's films are among the best this century's art has to offer. I realize
that my comments go against the beliefs of most Tarkovsky's "fans", and I am willing
to discuss these points with anybody who feels otherwise.

what nature means for us and what we need from other persons.

I met Andrej's "Andrej Rublev" 15 years ago, a hot afternoon in summertime
with some friends of mine...from then my love for his world, poetry and aesthetic
increased more and more...Then went all the other masterpieces..."Sacrifice",
"The mirror", "Solaris" (unfortunately in Italy there's a version with 40 minutes
cut off for which Tarkowsky refused a price!...), "Nostalghia" (I went to the
wonderful San Galgano abbey nearby Siena), "Stalker", "Ivan's Childhood" till
his first opera "Katok I Skrypka"... For these reasons I am hopeful for Humankind.

As a constant admirer of Tarkovsky's films for at lest 15 years,I wonder if
we shouldn't rather remember what St.Maximus the Confessor said:"Theology without
practice is the theology of deamons" when making judgments on Andrei Tarkovsky's
films.Beyond all the magic they, undoubtedly hold, beyond the images and the sound
they seem to be much closer to the Byzantine Orthodox icons than to the religious
(western) painting.Their ultimate purpose is to question our values, our (lack
of) faith,to provide us with hope in order to be able to fight on till the end, till
the dry branches of the rotten tree (as in "The Sacrifice") give green leaves
again.Like the Byzantine icons, perhaps we should not speak that much about their
evident aesthetic value, but rather concentrate on their trans-figurative nature. It
is not mere art and beauty we can find in all Tarkovky's films. It is art and beauty
endowed with a sort of sacrament.T
